Organiser, Folklorist Ku. Shi. Haridas Bhat Passes Away
Prof Ku Shi Haridas Bhat (Kunjibettu
Shiva Haridas Bhat), a rare combination of many achievements,
interests and concerns, one of the tallest figures in Kannada
cultural circles, passed away at Udupi on the 20th of August.
He was Seventy Six. Popularly
known as 'Kushi', Prof. Bhat was a person with an outstanding
contribution to whatever activity he took up. He was a
lecturer and later Principal of MGM College Udupi. Later he
became the Director of RRC Floklore Study Institute and of
Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Research Center of the MGM College. He
organised very successfylly many conferences, festivals,
performances, workshops, documentation seminars. He gave a new
dimension to the Tulu movement by his deeds and thoughts. He
led the publication of over fifty books - all of great academic
value. He supported and encouraged young writers. His
tremendous capacity at organisation won him worldwide acclaim. Prof
Bhat was teacher of Economics besides being a scholar in Kannada,
Tulu and Hindi. He has toured Europe and Asian countries
leading art troupe and cultural delegations. He has over thirty
books, hundereds of speeches to his credit. Prof
Bhat is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters.
His places is, as Sri K K Pai, Chairman Manipal Group of
Institutions has put it, "really unique" and "his

Talamaddale Season in
Full Flow Talamaddale, is
an indoor variety of Yakshagana specially designed for the wet
season. The main reason of Talamaddale performances is between
July to November. This year the season is in full flow, in the
entire Yakshagana area - D K, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Kasaragod, Shimoga,
Chikmagalur and other areas. There have already been over few hundred
major and minor performances with young and old artists giving
exposition to the prasangas. Back..

K Ramesh Achar Honoured
Leading female role actor
Sri M K Ramesh Achar Thirthalli, was recently honoured at Hariharpur
in function organised by a committeee at Malleshayya Chatra.
Sri Alige Vivekananda, President of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Koppa
who presided over, gave a call to make a study of the contributions
of Malnad area to Yakshagana. He said Sri Ramesh Achar is a
very good artist and he is the proud possession of Malnad

Sundar Rao, artist and ex-MLA recalled his association with Sri
Ramesh Achar. Prof M L Samaga, Vidwan Umakanth Bhat, Dr M P
Joshy were guests of honour. Sri Ramesh Achar thanked the

Doomanna Shetty Honoured Senior
Arthadari Sri Balagutthu Doomanna Shetty was honoured with the
presigious Polali Shasthry Award recently at the function organised at 'Ramyusha',
Tadambail, Sruatkal the residence of Sri K Ramanath Rao. Sri Rao
is one of the disciples of Sri Shetty. Sri
Harikrishna Punaroor, President D K District Sahithya Parishat, presided
over and gave away the Award. Sri Ramanath Rao felicitated Sri
Doomanna Shetty. Sri P Shashidhara Aithala presented the memento.
Sri Sheni Gopalakrishna Bhat honoured Sri Shetty, A B Shetty Polali, M P
Joshy, Navneeth Shetty Kadri, Kuble Sundar Rao, Ex-Mayor Devanna Shetty,
Kasturi Varadaraya Pai, Perla Krishna Bhat, Jokatte Mohammed and many

Troupes
Begin Their Chowthi Thirugata It
has been customary in the last few decades for a number of professional
groups led by an artist to take up a 'Chowthi Thirugata' during two to
three weeks following Ganesh Chaturthi. The troupes are formed for
this specific purpose. They perform at the Ganeshotsava festivals
by Sarvajanika Ganesh Utsava Committees, Malnad areas, the coastal,
Bangalore, Mysore and Madras. These tours provide a good
opportunity to the artists as well as to the art lovers of these areas
to see performances by artists picked from various Melas and formed into
a compact group. Yakshagana
play and Talamaddale are part of the Ganesh Chaturthi in celebrations
all over the Yakshagana area both at the public level and also at some
domestic level festivals. It
is common experience that no artist - professional or amateur - is free
on days of Ganesh Chaturthi. Note:

Shastry Honoured
Senior Arthadari, Sri C
Gopalakrishna Shasthry Moodambail was honoured at Sri Venkatramana
Temple Hall, Bantwal on the 26th of August in the function organised to
celebrate the anniversary and the validictory of the Shravana Masa
Yakshagana Talamaddale series organised by Sri Tirumala Venkatramana
Swamy Yakshagana Sangha. Sri B
Damodhar Prabhu, Managing Trustee of the Temple who presided over said
that the temple will continue supporting and encouraging the art.
Sri Shastry was honoured with a shawl, a scroll, phala tamboola and
momento. He outlined his interest and involvement in the art and
stressed the need for Puranic scholarship to enrich the 'Artha'. He
thanked the Sangha and his co-artists and Gurus. Dr Joshy
felicitated him by outlining his achivements. Basti Vamana Shenoy
Trustee and Committee members proposed in vote of thanks. The
trustees, executives of the temple, senior artists led by Perla Krishna
Bhat were present. The programme was followed by Talamaddale
performances of 'Dakshadhvara' and 'Seethapahara'. Note:
Sri Tirumala Venkatramana Temple Bantwal has been arranging a month long
Talamaddale series for over a century. A legend has it that a
Bhagawath called Manjunatha recovered a lost idol of the Lord from the
Kodagu King by presenting a Yakshagana Talamaddale. So that is
being commemorated till today by the 'Shravana Masa' series. This
series offers good opportunities to many Sanghas (Associations) as it
gives a platform for their performances.

Balakrishna Kolya gets
Paniyadi Award
"Sri S U
Paniyadi was a pioneering leader in the Tulu movement. He was a
freedom fighter. His work in Tulu is really a part of his
freedom struggle, inspired by Mahatma Gandhiji's call to revive and
rejuvenate our languages. Tulu Yakshaganas have actually carried
forward the light kindled by Sri Paniyadi" said Dr Prabhakara
Joshy presiding over the S U Paniyadi Award function organised by
Tulukoota Udupi, Essel Advertisers Udupi. Sri
Balakrishna Kolya was given the Award for his novel Agga-One which was
released on the occasion by artist Kumble Sundar Rao. Sri Kumble
called upon Tuluvas to support such efforts and use Tulu language in a
creative way. The award winner Sri Balakrishna Kolya narrated
the background of his novel. The president of UAE Tulukoota Sri
Krishnaraja Tantry, the sponsor of the award felicitated the awardee

Scholar
Thalthaje is 75
Poet, Yakshagana artist,
research scholar, lexicographer, folklorist Sri Prof Thalthaje Keshava
Bhat turned seventy five recently. Born
at Thalthaje near Bayur (now in Kasargod) Keshava Bhat is a scholar in
Kannada, Samskritha and Hindi. He has about 40 books to his
credit, besides hundreds of articles. He has been a reputed
teacher, researcher, text book writer, poet and folklorist. His
special interests are ancient Kannada literature, Yakshagana and folk
songs. He has had keen
interest in Yakshagana since his childhood. He is a Bhagawatha and
Maddalegar besides being a prasanga writer. He lives in Bangalore and
is active in scholarly pursuits. A
committe has been set up to felicitate Sri Thalthaje by publishing
about three thousand pages of his writings and a felicitation volume
containing his life and achievements. The convenor Sri K P

- Programme at Bangalore Yakshakardama,
a group of artists at Bangalore presented a performance of 'Mathsyamadhava
Mahime' (Karkatasura Vadhe) at Yavanika Auditorium, Bangalore.

Kalakoota, Athrady celebrated its fourth 'Foundation Day' recently at
the Government School Athrady. Sri Narayana Upadhyaya of the

Bhavanishankar Nayak, Smt Appi Bai, Headmisterss and other guests graced

K Narasimha is No More Yakshagana
artist Kemmannukere Narasimha (45) died recently at Saibrakatte of
Kundapur Taluk. Sri Narasimha had retired after over few decades
of service in various Melas of Badaguthittu. His roles like
Abhimanyu, Kichaka, Hanuman had made a mark. He was a versatile
artist knowing Chende and Sangeetha and was dedicated professional of

More Bhamini A
performance of the experimental yakshagana performance 'Bhamini', a
one role (EKAHARYA) yakshagana female role expression was presented by
Sri Mantapa Prabhakara Upadhyaya at Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan Mangalore
recently. Bhamini is a concept designed, directed and written by
well known scholar writer 'Shathavadhani' Dr R Ganesh Bangalore.
It is a presentation in dance, of the various moods of a Nayika
(heroine) as enumerated in Natyashastra. It involoves feelings
like love, separation, craving for the hero, anger, disillusionment etc,
in a broader framework of philosophic suggestion. It is a type of
'allegory' dance series, combining feminine love with a soul's craving
for the Lord, Paramatma. Earlier Dr R Ganesh gave an Asthavadhana
performance. (It is a traditional art combining scholarship,
intelligence, wit and memory where in eight 'Chalengers' question the 'Avadhani'
who replies to all of them as per complicated rules of the
game). The avadhana lasted over three hours. Both
the programmes were organised by Sri Shankara Prathistana Kotekar and
Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Mangalore Kendra. Sri
Sathyashankara Bollava, Chairman of the Shankara Prathistana led and co-ordinated
the programmes. Sri B Damodar Prabhu, Hon. Secretary Bharatiya
Vidya Bhavan welcomed. Artists Kolyur Ramachandra Rao and Kumble

- Decennial Celebrations
Yakshalahari, Kinnigoli
organised a series of functions including 'Tenkutitu Havyasi Kalavidara
Talamaddale Competition, bringing out a souvenir 'yakshadasa' and
honouring eminent artists during its Decennial Celebrations.
The Talamaddale competition
was inaugurated by Trn Dr Satish Holla at Yugapurusha Kinnigoly on
02.08.2000. These competitions continued till 11.08.2000 and 12
selected troupes participated in it. Finally 'Yakshakoota' puttur,
Sri Vinayaka Yakshagana Mandali, Tadambail and 'Tenkutittu Yakshagana
Hitarakshana Vedike, Sullia' were declared as the winners of the I, II
and III prizes respectively. The prizes were sponsored by
Corporation Bank, Mangalore (I), M/S Kaveri Sales Coroporation Moodbidri
- Kaveri, Kinnigoly (II) and M/S Padmashree Agencies, Moodbidri
(III). The prizes were given away to the winners during the main
function on 12.08.2000. The
main function of the Decennial Celebrations was chaired by Mr Amarnath
Shetty, Ex-Minister who praised the activities of Yakshalahari, Sri
Laxmi Narayana Asranna of Kateel blessed the occasion. Yakshagana
artist and eminent scholar Mr Booba yane Dooja Shetty, Korgi
Venkateshwara Upadhyaya, Simanthoor Narayana Shetty, P Srinivasa Bhat
and Mukyaprana were felicitated during this occasion. Sri P
Krishna Bhat introduced and felicitated these artist. Besides 'Yakshashree'
and 'Kalaposhaka' honours were conferred on those eminent personalities
who were generous enough to help Yakshalahari in organising these

Prof.
K S Narayanacharya's Discourses at Mangalore Senior
religious and literary scholar Prof. K S Narayanacharya of Dharwad,
delivered a fifteen day discourse series on Sri Ramayana at Sri
Venkatramana temple Mangalore. In his scholarly exposition Prof.
Acharya narrated and analysed the story of Sri Rama, in the religious
moral and religious dimension. The lecture series was arranged by the
Satsangha committee, to commemorate the 75th birthday of Guru Sri
Sudhindrathirtha Swamiji of Kashi Mutt. Prof. Acharya was honoured

Troupe's Tour of South East Asia Sri
Idagunji Maha Ganapathi Yakshagana Mandali, Keremane completed a
performance tour of South East Countries from the 13th of August to the
29th of August. The troupe was led by the director Keremane
Shambhu Hegde and Secretary Shivananda Hegde. The troupe had a
hectic programme of tour which included Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia,
Laos and Philippines. The tour was organised by the ICCR, New

gets Srinivasa Udupa Award Famous
Maddlegar Sri Durgappa Gudigar was awarded the Late Karkada Srinivasa
Udupa Award at Saligrama, recently. The
award has been instituted in the name of Late Sri Srinivasa Udupa,
Karada near Saligrama. Sri Udupa was renowned teacher and one of
the founders of Makkala Mela (Children's Troupe), Saligrama. The
Children's Troupe has made outstanding contribution to Yakshagana by
training children and giving quality performances. The
function organised by the Udupa Trust was held at Sri Vani Vilasa
Sanskrit School, Saligrama. The octogenarian artist-organiser
advocate M M Hegde presided. Sri B Ganapathi, Sub-Editor 'Taranga',
Karunakara Shetty, Troup proprietor of Perdoor Mela and Bhagawatha
Subramanya Dhareshwar spoke on the achievements, professionalism and

Inaugurated At S D M College, Ujire A
Yakshagana Sangha was inaugurated at the S D M College Ujire by senior
artist Sri Kumble Sundar Rao on the 29th of August. The Sangha is
a forum for training and performance for the students. Sri Rao stressed
the need for preserving cultural forms. Principal Dr B Yahsovarma
who welcomed, gave a call to all the youngsters to take keen interest in
Yakshagana. The inaugeral
featured a Talamaddale 'Krishna Sandhana' by well known artists.

Malla
Yakshagana Sangha Planning Silver Jubilee Sri
Durgaparameshwari Yakshagana Sangha, Malla, Kasargod is planning to
celebrate its Silver Jubilee in the next March, in a grand way.
The Sangha was founded by Late Sri Puttige Ramakrishna Joisa, one of the
great Bhagawathas of yesteryears in 1975. The
office bearers of the Sangha Vishnu Bhat, Raghuram, and Narayana have
informed in a press release that a Silver Jubilee Committee has been set
up to plan a three day programme.
Mankude Sanjivanna Remembered
Famous lady role actor Late Sri Mankude Sanjiv Shetty
was fondly remembered at a function organised as commemoration programme
at the Tulu Akademy Mangalore on the 30th August. Two of
Sanjivanna's collegues - Kumble Sundar Rai and Kolyur Ramachandra
Rao narrated their days with him and outlined his contribution to Tulu
Yakshagana, his unassuming nature, blemish less character and his
dedication to duty.
Akademy President H B Shetty Polali who presided paid
homage tot eh artist. Dr Vaman Nandavan and Registrar H S Shivarudrappa
conducted the programme.
"Seethapahara" prasanga was presented by
senior artists in Talamaddale form.
Tribute to Kushi: At the above function, Akademi
President Polali paid tribute to Late K S Haridas Bhat. He also
announced Tulu Akademi's intentions to conduct a full day seminar on
Kushi as a respect to the great soul.

Balipa Prathistana Programmes
Balipa Bhagawatha Trust (Prathistana) is body foundedby
the abhimanis of the great Bhagawath Late Balipa Narayana Bhagawath
(Grandfather of presently famous Balipa Narayana Bhagawath). It is
functioning at Perla of Kasargod District. It organises training
programmes and performance festivals at Perla.
This year's programmes include a week long Talamaddale
competition from 10th to 16th of September, honouring of the
octagenarian maddalegar Nedle Narasimha Bhat and a Talamaddale by senior
artists on the last day - the President of the Trust Sri S Madhava Bhat
has sought the co-operation of the admirers and art lovers.

Bannanje Discourse Series
Vidyavachaspathi Bannanje Govindacharya is a big name in
the field of religious discourses and Sanskrit scholarship.
Billava Seva Sangha Udupi organised a week long discourse series by
Bannanje on Bhagavadgeetha form August 26th to September 1st, 2000
at Narayana Guru Sabha Bhavan. Sri Bannanje was honoured by the
Sangha on the concludingt day.

Dondole Koota Celebrates Golden Jubilee
The Ganesh Chaturthi Talamaddale at Dondole in
Dharmasthala completed fifty years this year. The regular annual
programme started by Late Sri D Suryanarayana Rao, is being continued by
his sons and daughters led by D Shankarrama Rao.
The Jubilee year programme of this year featured
honouring of artists (including posthumus), Bhajan Sabha programmes and
a full night Talamaddale by leading artists. Sri D Harshendra

has installed 3 awards for Yakshagana - The Kukkila Krishna Bhat Award
for critics and researchere, Kargallu Subbanna Bhat Award for female

music). This year's award function is to be held at Kodapadavu

Four Troupes Announce Their Artists and Prasangas
As Usual, four leading melas have announced their next
season's artists and new story prasangas. The Karnataka
Yakshagana Nataka Shabha, Sri Ananthapadmanabha Yakshagana Mandali
Perdur, Sri Guruprasad Yakshagana Mandali Saligrama, and Sri
Mangaladevi Yakshagana Mandali, Mangalore have come out with big
advertisement in 'Udayavani' announcing the opening of contract
bookings. It is to be noted that three of these four troupes are
run by one proprietor - Sri P Kishan Hegde. The other one is by
Sri Karunakar Hegde. Following is the summary of their
announcements.
The Karnataka Mela
The Karnataka Mela (also called earlier as IRA Mela)
is completing 50 years now. Founded by Late K Koraga Shetty and
run by Sri K Vittla Shetty for long, now it is with Sri P Kishen Hegde.
The artists of the season are: Messerx Padyana Ganapathi Bhat,
Karunakara Shetty, Ravichandra K, Delantamajalu Subramanya Bhat,
Kadaba Narayanachar, Prabhakara Gore, all in the background.

Hasyagars, Amba Prasad, Siddakatte Sadashiva Shetty, Bolantur Jagadeesh

Siribale', by Dr Chandrashekar Shetty, 'Madura Madhane' by
Ravikumar Suratkal, 'Mangala Gauri' by Deviprasad Shetty.

Swamiji's Installation Anniversary
Moodabidre's Jaina Mutt is a leading guiding center for
Jains in this area. The head of the Mutt, Sri Charukirthi
Swamiji's first installation anniversary (Pattabhisheka Varshikothsava)
was held with religious enthusiasm at the Mutt recently.. The day's
schedule included Pooja, Pravachana and starting a fund to renovate a
Basadi at Moodabidre.
There was a full night Talamaddale programme on the day
at Mahavir Bhavan to a packed audience. The prasangas were 'Bharata
Bahubali' and 'Karnavasana' by well know artists. Sri Swamiji
honoured artists and delivered the ashirvachana pravachana.
